What is Ungurahua Oil?

Ungurahua Oil, also known as “Milpesos,” ungurahui, seje, and recently shortened to simply Rahua™ - a hair treatment brand with the same name - is extracted from the fruit of the Seje palm (Oenocarpus bataua), which is native to tropical rain forests from Panama to South America, including Colombia, Venezuela, Guyana, Brazil, Bolivia, Ecuador, and Peru.

The palm, which can reach 82 feet high, has only one stem with inflorescence arranged in the form of a horse’s tail. It starts producing fruit in its eighth year, with only up to 3 inflorescence per year, which take between 10 to 14 months to develop.

Each palm produces an average of only 2 bunches (inflorescence) of fruits per year, which are harvested from June to December, for an equivalent of 32 kg of fruit that yields only 2.4 liters of oil. This fact makes the oil extremely expensive to produce on a large commercial scale.

Remote indigenous communities traditionally extracted the oil by cooking the fruits in boiling water for up to 4 hours. The cooked fruits were smashed, along with the kernels, using a mortar and cooked again with water. The liquid fraction (oil and water) was cooled and decanted, after which the oil was separated from the aqueous fraction by density differences.

Today, a higher quality oil commonly called Ungurahua Oil is extracted by mechanically crushing the whole fresh Ungurahua fruit. It yields a light to dark greenish liquid with little odor and taste and is high in unsaturated fatty acids, especially oleic acid, which is traditionally used in medicine, cosmetics, and food.

Unrefined Ungurahua Oil has been used for centuries by Amazonian tribes and, due to its antibacterial and anti-fungal properties, is considered the best remedy for treating scalp problems, especially itchy dandruff and hair loss. It stimulates and regenerates follicle cells, thus controlling scalp disorders caused by bacterial infections and increasing circulation and capillary strength.
Unrefined Ungurahua Oil can be applied directly to the scalp as an herbal treatment for scalp disorders. It helps revitalize damaged hair, boosts shine, increases hair strength, and controls the frizziest hair, as well as improving the overall health of hair and scalp, strengthening the hair follicles, and preventing hair loss.
Adding Unrefined  Ungurahua Oil to hair formulations helps to revitalize the roots, helps to heal scalp disorders, control hair loss, and add moisture, malleability and shine, as well as detangling strands, controlling frizz and defining curls.

    Best Oil Ever

Posted by Mykia Franklin on Mar 1st 2017

This is the only oil that actually penetrates the hair. I can use everyday and my hair is never oily only very soft. Will continue to by forever, I don't think there is a better oil out there.

    Recommended for Dry Curly Hair

Actually absorbed and moisturized my naturally curly (curly-coily) hair which is very dry. I placed a small amount on a section of freshly washed (not conditioned), damp hair and waited until hair was completely dry to feel it. It was moisturized and not greasy, and did not have to moisturize that section until 3 days later. I know oils do not moisturize but seal in moisture, however this one is an exception to the rule. A must-have for winter or anytime you actually need to moisturize naturally curly dry hair.

The best hair oil hands down

Posted by A. Valentine on Nov 30th 2014

I used a few small drops as per the directions and blew out my hair. Wow, talk about soft, silky hair. I'm impressed. I have high maintence hair and nothing tames my frizz. I even put the oil to the test. It was raining, so I decided before I write this review. Let me go outside. It usually takes 2.2 seconds for my hair to frizz out. Between running in/out of the stores, and running from the parking deck and to my house, and the bathroom to check the results. Impressive... the oil has pasted the test. just a side note: A little goes a long way. You can always add a little bit more, but you can't take away.
